AFRICA UNITE

Na data em que Bob Marley completaria 60 anos, sua família decide fazer uma extensa comemoração. Três gerações da família Marley viajam então para a Etiópia, para organizar uma grande festividade. Com o propósito de inspirar os africanos a se unirem pelo futuro de seu continente, é realizado um evento de uma semana. O acontecimento mais marcante é um show de mais de doze horas visto por 350 mil pessoas. Sob o ritmo do reggae, o evento é apresentado em todos os seus aspectos: musical, político e histórico, traduzindo o legado de Bob Marley em entrevistas, imagens e canções.

THIS IS ENGLAND

Shaun tem 12 anos e vive com a mãe em uma pequena cidade costeira na Inglaterra, em 1983. Solitário, sofre com a ausência do pai, morto na Guerra das Malvinas. No começo das férias escolares, conhece uma gangue de skinheads, na qual encontra a amizade e os modelos de comportamento que procurava. Numa festa, é apresentado a Combo, skinhead mais velho que acabou de sair da prisão e o adota como protegido. A postura racista do homem impressiona os jovens, mas todos o admiram, e logo a gangue começa a aterrorizar as minorias étnicas da vizinhança. Prêmio do Júri no Festival de Roma 2006.

Nada de Chimbinha ou Joelma. Muito antes desse "calypso" que a televisão brasileira mostra frequentemente, o verdadeiro ritmo originário de Trinidad e Tobago, teve sua passagem pelo Brasil e permaneceu por pouco tempo em sua cadência original. Mas por outro lado, foi de grande importância e influência em outros ritmos brasileiros. A sequência a seguir é uma dessas pouquíssimas gravações de brasileiros tocando e cantando um calipso puro, sem influência de outros ritmos. As gravações variam de 1939 à 1960.

"SOUL SAUCE" FROM PAMA

Indiscutivelmente o melhor disco de Soul já postado no blog...

O soul, apesar de oriundo dos Estados Unidos, tem suas ligações com a música jamaicana. Final dos anos 60, era o principal ritmo, junto do reggae, que dividia as pistas nos bailes da Inglaterra, país que nessa época mais se adaptou aos ritmos jamaicanos e fez os jovens criarem identidades e estilos próprios. Os cantores de Soul e Reggae tentavam a todas as maneiras seduzir com seus ritmos a cultura skinhead, principal público desses bailes na Inglaterra, fato que fez muitos artistas jamaicanos regravarem hits do Soul e apresentá-los em seus shows. Um dos maiores exemplos disso seria o famoso Jimmy Cliff, que por um longo tempo, no início de sua carreira, se titulava com um cantor de Soul.

O disco foi lançado pela PAMA em 1969, época do auge dos bailes freqüentados pelos skinheads ingleses e rude boys jamaicanos, e mostra claramente o nível que deveria ser essas festas da época... 12 faixas altamente dançantes...

OLD SOCA (1912-1929) - (1930-1939)

Soca, assim como o Calypso é um ritmo originário de Trinidad & Tobago, e que ambos são considerados até hoje a base para o carnaval local que acontece todo ano, com concursos semelhantes aos das escolas de samba cariocas e paulistas, como a eleição de melhores cantores, músicas, etc.
Porém somente a partir da década de 70, que o ritmo atingiu o auge da popularidade de Trinidad, em uma versão bem mais moderna da original, com uma forte influência eletrônica nas músicas e uma mistura de ritmos americanos e de outras partes do Caribe. Atualmente, o soca se assemelha com o Ragga jamaicano devido suas influências no país, onde cantores e dançarinas do ritmo se aproximam do estilo, roupas e do requebrado jamaicano, porém há suas peculiaridades, o que faz um ritmo apenas com influências e não exatamente igual ao ragga.

As coletâneas postadas abaixo são gravações raríssimas do Calypso e Soca em suas versões originais, e mostram artistas em suas fases iniciais.

Não toca forró em nem se quer é nordestina, mas acredito que o disco agrade a todos os que admiram a música de raiz do Brasil... apesar de muito simples, o disco é bem interessante...

"Nasceu numa fazenda no pantanal do Mato Grosso do Sul e cresceu rodeada de peões, comitivas e violeiros. Fascinada pelas violas caipiras, a família não permitia que aprendesse a tocar, o que acabou fazendo por conta própria, às escondidas. Aos poucos ficou conhecida entre os boiadeiros da região. Casou-se por imposição dos pais aos 17 anos, abandonando o marido pouco tempo depois para juntar-se a um paraguaio que tocava violão e violino. Separou-se novamente e, resolvida a tocar viola em bares e farras, deixou os filhos dos dois casamentos com pais adotivos e ganhou a estrada até encontrar o terceiro marido, com quem está junto há mais de 35 anos. Depois de desaparecer por mais de 30 anos, foi encontrada bastante doente por uma irmã, que a levou para São Paulo, onde foi "descoberta pela mídia" a partir de uma matéria elogiosa na revista norte-americana "Guitar Player". Apresentou-se em um teatro pela primeira vez aos 67 anos, e gravou discos em seguida. Foi escolhida em 1993 pela Guitar Player como uma das "100 mais" por sua atuação nas violas de 6, 8, 10 e 12 cordas."

Conhecido como "Calypso King of the World", Sparrow é considerado um dos mais importantes nomes não só de Trinidad, mas da música caribenha em geral. Campeão por nove vezes do "Carnival Road March", competição onde os artistas disputam o título através de uma pontuação, bem similar ao carnaval paulista e carioca, Sparrow divide a segunda colocação do ranking com Super Blue, perdendo somente para Lord Kitchener.

Sparrow foi também um dos cantores de Calypso mais populares na Jamaica durante os anos de 1950 à 1960 e responsável por influenciar tamanhamente na evolução da música na ilha.

Assim como os contemporâneos Little John, Little Harry, Musical Youth, entre outros jovens, Billy Boyo começava a aparecer em um cenário que surgia nos anos 80 na música jamaicana: o Dancehall.
Porém Billy Boyo teve uma carreira curta, deixando apenas dois álbuns gravados até o ano de 2000, quando faleceu.
Rumores ligavam sua morte a assassinato... porém, tempos após, afirmou-se que sua morte ocorrera devido um tumor cerebral.
